About EMDR
(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy)

EMDR offers a transformative approach to healing by helping individuals process and reframe distressing memories through guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories, reducing the emotional intensity and making them feel less overwhelming.

If you are suffering from past trauma or PTSD, EMDR can help you deal with responses to certain triggers. EMDR Therapy is only provided by licensed therapists who have specific training in EMDR.

Sessions can be scheduled based on your needs and availability and can be stopped, paused, or adjusted at any time.

What is trauma therapy?
Trauma therapy is focused support for experiences that overwhelm your nervous system and continue to affect how you feel, think, or react. Trauma can come from a single event or repeated stress over time. Trauma therapy helps you feel safer in your body, reduce symptoms like hypervigilance or shutdown, and build healthier coping and connection, without forcing you to relive what happened.
What does EMDR stand for?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an evidence-based trauma therapy that helps the brain process distressing memories so they feel less intense in the present. Instead of repeatedly talking through a painful event, EMDR uses structured phases and bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to reduce triggers, shift negative beliefs, and support emotional relief and resilience.
Why use EMDR for trauma?
Trauma often lives in the nervous system, not just in thoughts. EMDR is effective because it helps the brain reprocess memories that feel “unfinished,” so the body stops reacting as if the threat is still happening. Over time, triggers tend to feel less activating, emotional intensity decreases, and many clients notice a shift from survival mode to more steadiness, clarity, and choice in how they respond.
What else can EMDR help with?
EMDR is best known for trauma and PTSD, but it can also help with concerns linked to distressing memories, body-based reactions, or negative core beliefs. People often use EMDR for trauma symptoms, panic, anxiety, grief, phobias, performance-related anxiety, medical trauma, distress after accidents, and “stuck” feelings connected to earlier experiences. EMDR can also target patterns like “I’m not safe,” “I’m not good enough,” or “It’s my fault,” when those beliefs were shaped by past events and still show up today.
What are the 8 phases of EMDR?
Here’s a short overview of the eight phases:
  1. History + treatment planning: identify goals, targets, and readiness
  • Preparation: build coping skills, grounding, and stabilization
  • Assessment: select the memory, belief, emotions, and body sensations
  • Desensitization: reprocess using bilateral stimulation to reduce distress
  • Installation: strengthen a more adaptive belief (example: “I’m safe now”)

  • Closure: stabilize and ensure you leave session grounded
  • Reevaluation: review progress and choose next targets
In EMDR, do I have to describe every detail of what happened?
Not necessarily. EMDR can be effective without sharing every detail out loud. You and your therapist will decide what’s needed based on your comfort, your history, and what supports your sense of safety. The goal is effective processing without pushing you past your window of tolerance.
Does Virtual EMDR work?
Yes! Virtual EMDR can be very effective, and many clients love it for the comfort and convenience of meeting from a familiar space. Therapists can use adapted bilateral stimulation methods (like tapping or visual tools) while still following the same structured EMDR phases. The most important factors are privacy, a stable connection, and having a plan for grounding and support before and after sessions.
What is an EMDR intensive?
An EMDR intensive is a longer session format designed to help you make more progress in a shorter amount of time.

Intensives can be helpful if you want momentum without stretching the process over months, if your schedule makes weekly sessions hard, or if you’re working through a specific event or pattern that’s repeatedly showing up as triggers. Some clients also choose intensives when they’re preparing for a life transition, want focused trauma work alongside ongoing talk therapy, or have already built stabilization skills and feel ready for deeper processing.
How do I know if EMDR or trauma therapy is right for me?
A therapist will assess your goals, history, current stress level, coping resources, and readiness. EMDR is not one-size-fits-all and pacing matters. If EMDR isn’t the best starting point, trauma-informed therapy can still help you build stability, reduce symptoms, and strengthen your nervous system so you can move forward safely.
