Lessons from My Dog: On Happiness, Boundaries, and Gratitude

As a therapist, I often look for life’s gentle teachers—those who model emotional wisdom in simple, authentic ways. One of my most consistent teachers? My dog.

She’s 13 years old now. Small but mighty. When she was younger, she rarely asked for anything. She stayed close, wagged her tail when she was happy, and simply adapted to whatever was happening around her. But as she’s grown older, she’s changed—and in all the best ways.

Now, when she comes in from outside, she expects a treat. If I forget, she follows me quietly, waiting for me to notice. And if I take too long? She gives me a bark. Just one. Assertive and clear. It’s not something she used to do, but it’s something age has taught her: it’s okay to ask for what you need.

She’s also never lost her joy. She jumps in the chair next to me, rolls over for a belly rub, or leans into my side just to be close. Her tail still wags with enthusiasm, and she greets happiness like an old friend. She seeks it out—and she shares it freely.

Here’s what she’s taught me:

- Speak up for what you need.

- Pursue what makes you happy.

- Stay close to the ones you love.

- And never forget to wag your tail.

In other words, don’t be afraid to show your joy. Celebrate the moments that make you happy—and let the people who bring you that joy know it. Gratitude is a quiet kind of magic—it lifts the hearts of both the one who gives it and the one who receives it.
